Overview

Open all pages about Pressure ulcers (pressure sores)

Symptoms of a pressure ulcer are discoloured patches on the skin, which can feel painful, warm, spongy or hard.

Treatments for pressure ulcers include protective dressings, creams and antibiotics if the ulcer is infected. Surgery is sometimes also needed.

Pressure ulcers are caused by pressure on your skin. If you have difficulty moving, the pressure of your body weight on your skin can cause ulcers.

Changing position regularly and using special mattresses and cushions can help prevent pressure ulcers.

Pressure ulcers (pressure sores or bed sores) are areas of damage to your skin and the tissue underneath.
