Some people are more at risk of getting osteomyelitis, including people who have had it before, and people with diabetes or a weakened immune system.

Osteomyelitis causes severe pain, usually in the feet, legs or back. Other symptoms can include swelling, a limp, and a high temperature.

To check if you have osteomyelitis your GP will usually take a look at the affected area. You may need tests such as a blood test or scans.

Osteomyelitis is treated with antibiotics. You may need to be treated in hospital if your symptoms are severe, and you may also need surgery.

Osteomyelitis is a bone infection. It can cause long term problems if it’s not treated.
