Polyhydramnios does not usually cause symptoms. If it's severe, it can cause tummy pain and make your tummy get bigger suddenly.

Polyhydramnios is often diagnosed at routine pregnancy appointments. If you have symptoms, you may be referred for a scan to measure the fluid.

The cause of polyhydramnios is often unknown, but it could be because of a condition such as gestational diabetes or an infection during pregnancy.

Polyhydramnios usually does not need treatment. If the cause is known it can be treated, or the excess amniotic fluid may be drained.

Complications of polyhydramnios are rare. In severe cases it may cause problems such as premature birth or low birth weight.

Polyhydramnios is when there is too much amniotic fluid in the womb during pregnancy. It's not usually serious.
