Atherosclerosis
Overview
Atherosclerosis does not always have symptoms. Sometimes it can cause symptoms including chest pain, shortness of breath and tiredness.
Atherosclerosis happens when fatty deposits build up in the arteries. It can be caused by high cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking.
Lifestyle changes can help stop atherosclerosis getting worse. Things you can do include stopping smoking, eating healthily and exercising regularly.
Medicines can help lower your risk of a heart attack or stroke if you have atherosclerosis. Surgery is sometimes needed to improve blood flow.
Atherosclerosis is where the arteries are narrowed and it’s harder for blood to flow through them.
