Myositis

Overview

Open all pages about Myositis

The main symptom of myositis is weak and painful muscles. Other symptoms include tiredness, weight loss, night sweats and a skin rash.

You'll be referred to a specialist if a GP thinks you have myositis. You may need tests, such as an MRI or electromyography scan, or a muscle biopsy.

It's not clear what causes myositis, but it may be genetic. Most types are autoimmune conditions, where your body's immune system attacks itself.

Treatment for myositis usually involves controlling the symptoms using a combination of medicines and physiotherapy to regain your strength.

Myositis is the name for a group of rare conditions that cause muscle weakness. It slowly gets worse over time, but treatment can help.
