Symptoms of toxic shock syndrome can include a high temperature, muscle aches, a raised skin rash that feels like sandpaper and flu-like symptoms.

You can get toxic shock syndrome from using a tampon, contraceptive diaphragm or cap, from an infected cut, wound or burn, or after giving birth.

Toxic shock syndrome needs urgent treatment in hospital. You will usually be given antibiotics as well as fluids, oxygen and other medicines.

To prevent toxic shock syndrome follow the instructions for using a tampon, menstrual cup, contraceptive cap or diaphragm. Keep cuts and burns clean.

Toxic shock syndrome is a rare but life-threatening condition caused by an infection. Symptoms develop quickly and you need urgent treatment.
